Virtual Open House (Replay)

Revisit our virtual open house.

We discussed our treatment philosophy; the challenges (and opportunities) of these challenging times; and how we stay connected and how our clients are getting ahead.

Even as experienced, professionals, we learn new things from our clients every day.

IMPORTANT TOPICS INCLUDED

Online therapy via Zoom - Does it work!?

  • Zoom is such a powerful tool in times like this and connects us in ways we could have never imagined.

  • Even Dr. Phil Schneider is raving about online therapy via Zoom
He told the team how much he loves working via Zoom and the surprising fact that we see even more support, deeper impact and better success than before (in the office.)

  • “When we remove the barriers of geographic distance, then we open up a line of communication that has a lot less barriers.”
As long as have (internet) connection, we can do great things together - all we need is an internet connection.

  • We align with parents, championing parents’ transformation to become the heroes for their kids’ speech to open-up.
An important clinical outcome is that COVID19 makes it so clear we cannot and do not work directly with younger child, rather parents are given an opportunity to strengthen their bond with their children and the children benefit most through their “at-home” experience with parent/s.

We open up a line of communication that has a lot less barriers.

  • Accessible, affordable and effective
This is one of the new initiatives we started to accommodate more people seeking more affordable help.

  • The power of the group dynamic is immeasurable:
As a group, we name the elephant in the room, and strip its power over us.
We stop tiptoeing around, allowing this unnamed scary monster in the closet, that you tiptoe around, control you.

    • Sometimes we enjoy free-style talking,

    • Sometimes we experiment with speech strategies,

    • All the time, day we are listening and learning new ways to enjoy talking more freely and more openly.

  • Everyone gets a chance to share, and everyone gets a chance to listen and everyone has the choice to challenge themselves (i.e. making phone calls to pizza places, using strategies or stuttering freely.)

  • Special guests and bonuses.

The power of the group dynamic is immeasurable.

Successfully helping people,
even though we have never met-in-person!

  • Preschool children and families we have never met before.

  • School-age boys and girls in New York City (all the boroughs) and Tri-State area

  • Teens and adults home from college, working from home and more.

  • Customizing the meeting frequency and scheduling intensity in-line with clients’ needs

Truly, one of the gains of these challenging times, is the fact we have some extra time available to invest in projects that matter most.

Empowerment through SELF-MADE “Top 10 Lists”

  • Tiffany began to write with her clients top 10 things people should know about stuttering according to the individual.

  • We are consistently inspired and informed by others; in this case, the kids’ letters, in their own words, included the most recent issue from Stuttering Foundation of America.

  • This was an opportunity presented to young people, teens and young adults and many enjoyed it immensely; they opened and shared how they experienced communication - in their own words!

  • It’s amazing to witness the empowerment clients experience for themselves - it’s so apparent! - as they express and share their inner thoughts into the world, with ease.

    • Some clients were comfortable enough to sending it to people close to them, posting on social media, or turning it into art!

  • We’ve also shared our responses to frequently asked questions (FAQ’s)

Just reach-out. We are reachable.

Here are a few FAQ’s we discussed…

  • FAQ: My preschooler stutters, but how am I going to get my preschooler to sit for a 90-minute session through zoom?

A: That would be very difficult to have a preschooler sit and be focused for a certain period of time. With that being said, you wouldn’t have to sit down for 90 minutes on Zoom. In these cases, it’s about empowering the parents to feel confident to build a foundation of good communication for their child. The parents would do the work by becoming the therapist.

  • FAQ: This doesn’t sound like “traditional speech therapy.” Can you tell me more and why it’s different?

A: A lot of people view speech therapy in a more traditional sense with a preconceived, typically popular model of your child getting services at school or clinic at a set time, then setting another appointment when that is over. Our goal here is to work with the parents with the goal of helping you first.

We want you to (essentially) “fire us.” Meaning you get to point where you achieve and have what you need, and no longer need us to help you along.

The reality is, what influence do we have on the child for half an hour once a week? The parents are the ones communicating with their child whether they are in therapy or not.

  • FAQ: What is the typical frequency? What happens after the first consultation?

A: We want to do the work that is meaningful and timely. There is going to be a lot of investing in the process to help change grow as quickly as possible. It can look like meeting once a week for a few weeks in a row or twice a week for the first few weeks to get that momentum going. There is nothing typical about the work we do. We think about the individual personally and how we can personalize the plan to fit their needs. It’s all about making it work for the individual and making sure that they see the growth and change that they need.
